Spotlighted: Sustainable evolution in paint packaging
One thing is certain: recycled paint buckets are improving the industry. But they also bring some questions. Which brands are already packaging paint in recycled plastic? How does this ecological packaging affect the quality of your paint, and does it change the price? These are some questions you may have already dwelled on.
And we are happy to answer them for you!
Identical with a sustainable approach
To start with, we will reassure you right away. Recycled paint packaging does not drive up the price of the contents, nor does it change the quality. That's already good news. What the pots are prone to is a dent in the packaging, but even the regular plastic paint pots suffer from this from time to time.
The metal paint pots, on the other hand, are the strongest among paint buckets and are therefore almost impossible to break. Although from research by Metabolic, these metal containers are as much as 58% more harmful to the environment than paint pots made of recycled plastic .
Wise choice that grey paint bucket
Now that you already know that both price and quality remain the same, it might also be good to know how to recognise these recycled pots. It is actually very easy: if you see a grey plastic bucket, then you can assume that you have grabbed a recycled packaging. This is the case with Sigma, Sikkens, Trimetal and Dalapro, for example.
For the Akzonobel brands (Trimetal, Sikkens), their ecological packaging consists of at least 50% recycled plastic. Nice to know: the first two Sikkens paints to receive such sustainable packaging were Alpha Cover Mat SF and Alphatex SF. Now there are many more.
Sigma, on the contrary, opts for sustainable packaging made of as least as 90% recycled plastic.
And currently, all their interior wall paints are already available in such a recycled paint bucket. Bravo to that!
And among all these brands, Dalapro stands out, because all their products are available in this ecological packaging.
Go for eco paint
Great that paint manufacturers are thinking more and more about sustainability, which translates into ecological packaging and more products with the European Ecolabel.
But does this recycled packaging automatically mean you can pay with eco vouchers? This is not obvious, only when the paint content actually carries the eco-label (often water-based products and the white variety), only then can you pay with eco-cheques.
