Using matte lacquer outdoors? Forget it

Want to coat your outdoor woodwork in matte black or another stylish, mattt finish, but can’t find a suitable matte lacquer for exterior use? You're not alone. Many people look for a matte outdoor lacquer for wood — in matte black or anthracite, for example. But they only end up frustrated. Why is that? In this blog, we’ll explain why true matte exterior lacquers are so hard to find and what the reasons are behind it.

Want to coat your outdoor woodwork in matte black or another stylish, flat finish, but can’t find a suitable matte lacquer for exterior use? You're not alone. Many people look for a matte outdoor lacquer for wood — in matte black or anthracite, for example — only to end up frustrated. Why is that? In this blog, we’ll explain why true matte exterior lacquers are so hard to find and what the reasons are behind it.

Why matte exterior lacquer for wood is hard to find

A matte outdoor finish may sound chic, but in reality, it’s not the smartest choice. Matte finishes are more vulnerable to dirt, moisture and UV rays. Three elements that outdoor wood constantly has to endure. Paint manufacturers know this all too well, which is why you won’t find truly matte exterior lacquers on the market.

The downsides of using matte lacquer outdoors

  1. Faster fading: Matte lacquer absorbs more sunlight than, say, satin lacquer. This leads to faster fading and discoloration of the coated surface.
  2. Moisture can damage the wood more easily: Because matte lacquers contain less binder than glossy types, they’re more porous. That means moisture and dirt can more easily seep in and eventually damage the wood underneath.
  3. Higher dirt build-up: Matte finishes are rougher than satin, which makes it easier for dirt to cling to the surface. You’ll often feel the urge to clean it, but frequent scrubbing isn’t great for the lacquer layer.
  4. Lacquer can chalk or powder: With continuous exposure to wind and rain, the lacquer layer wears down over time. As a result, matte lacquer can begin to chalk, if you run your hand over the surface, you’ll notice a dusty residue.

Choose a smarter solution: the ‘almost matte’ alternative

So, using truly matte exterior lacquer? Best to forget about it. As soon as rain, sun and dirt come into play, the coating fails. It’s no coincidence you won’t find them in stores or online. But at Tintrio, we offer solid alternatives that you’ll enjoy for years to come!

We suggest a clever compromise: Sigma Tigron Soft Satin. This solvent-based exterior lacquer offers just enough matte feel to please the eye, but with the durability that outdoor wood really needs. Unlike true matte options, it holds up far better against the elements and keeps looking good for much longer.

Satin lacquer becomes matte over time

Say what?! Sounds like a weird joke or some kind of magic trick, right? But it’s pure reality.

Every satin-finish lacquer used outdoors has to deal with sun and rain. Over time, this causes the soft shine to fade. If your woodwork is always outside, you’ll slowly notice the satin look turning a bit more matte.

It doesn’t happen overnight, of course. It’s a slow transformation that takes years. In other words: even a satin lacquer finish will eventually become a bit more matte. Something to keep in mind when setting expectations for the long term.
