With the right preparations and tools, you can give the tiles in your bathroom, toilet or kitchen a whole new look. In principle, any tile can be painted, including ceramic and glazed tiles, as long as you make the right preparations and buy a suitable paint.

Why should I (not) paint my tiles?

To begin with: the benefits are numerous! You save yourself a whole lot of time, work, and money if you paint your tiles instead of breaking them out and replacing them.

Of course, as with everything, there are drawbacks to all the benefits. For instance, a painted tile is slightly less wear-resistant than the original surface. However, if you paint your tiles correctly and with the right paint and use an adapted brush or paint roller in the process, you're good for another few years.

Can I tar all tiles with the same brush?

The answer is simple: no. Floor tiles are different from wall tiles, and bathroom and toilet tiles are sometimes even slightly different from kitchen tiles. For example, you also have mosaic tiles, very large tiles, relief tiles or ceramic tiles and very smooth tiles, such as glazed tiles. The question now is: can you paint all these? And what’s the best way to prepare your surface?

You can paint both wall and floor tiles, but depending on which tiles you want to paint, you’ll need an adapted preparation or tile paint. For example, you usually need to apply a primer and seal the joints before you can effectively paint the tiles. As a primer, we recommend Sigma Multiprimer Aqua and Trimetal Multiprimer Aqua Protect. To seal your joints, Rubson Ft101 Sanitaryis perfect. The grout sealant not only prevents moisture from getting between your tiles, but also prevents mould.

Very polished tiles and floor tiles do require adapted preparation. First and foremost, they must be clean and grease-free for the paint to stick properly. You can read how to do this in this blog post. Mosaic tiles are normally no problem to paint. There’s a bit more grouting, but you can simply paint the joints. For relief tiles, depending on the depth of the relief, it’s better to use a brush, while for other smooth tiles a felt roller is perfect.

After the primer and sealant, you can of course give the tiles a fresh colour. For the final coat, you can choose the Sigma Tigron Aqua Satin and the Sigma Tigron Aqua Matt. You can also buy the paint in almost any colour. If it really has to go fast, you can also always opt for the Levis Simply Refresh Muurtegels Satin or the V33 Perfection Keuken. These paints don't require you to apply primer beforehand.

What about the tiles in my shower cabin?

Obviously, tiles in a wet environment require a different treatment than tiles that are walked on intensively. If, for example, there's almost constantly water on the tiles, like in your shower cubicle, we recommend cws Wertlack Duragrund 2K as a primer, with the matching top coat cws Wertlack Duratop 2K. Because it's a two-component paint, your tiles are protected from moisture and other damaging influences for an extra long time.

What colour should I choose for my tiles?

Colours and tastes vary. We can at least get you started on finding the ideal colour for your style.

If you want to give your kitchen or bathroom a timeless look, it's best to paint the tiles in a neutral and calming colour. With taupe, pastel or white tones you will always be fine. If soft or white tones aren't your cup of tea, you can always opt for a matt grey shade to create a concrete look. In spacious and bright rooms, you can also opt for stylish and timeless black.

Would you like it to be a bit more bold or playful? Then you can paint one wall in a light colour and the other walls in a slightly darker shade. Another fun idea is to opt for a trend colour. Most colour palettes contain some basic shades that you can use perfectly for your tiles. In addition, dare to experiment with bright colours. For example, try a warm shade of yellow or bright blue and enjoy the invigorating results. Energetic colours contrast perfectly with white cabinets and give your kitchen or bathroom tiles a fresh and playful look.
