Tip of the hat: there are mould-resistant paints and paints specially developed for damp walls.

How does mould appear on walls?

Mould in your bathroom, bedroom or kitchen is caused by a too much moisture. Mould can only develop in humid conditions. You can easily remove mould, but if you don't tackle the cause of the moisture problem, before you know it, you'll have mould patches again. That is why we list below the three most common causes of mould and what you can do about them:

Penetrating moisture from external walls to internal walls

If the moisture on exterior walls does not dry out properly, it can pass through to the interior walls. The result is damp walls and, consequently, mould. Permeable damp is often a problem in homes with cracks or damaged grouting. In this case, it is best to have the facade impregnated or try it yourself. The impregnation will stop the moisture from penetrating the facade.

You can tackle the moisture in the facade by impregnating with Sigma Siloxan Hydrophob Aqua hydrophobic agent. Just know that this will prevent you from painting your damp exterior walls for a few years.

Damp walls due to condensation

Do you often suffer from droplets on the ceiling and walls during autumn or winter? As your warm indoor air cools down, condensation moisture forms. Is this bad? If you suffer from droplets on your walls and ceilings for long periods of time and do not ventilate your room enough, the condensation moisture has a chance to develop further into mould. This type of mould often occurs in bathrooms or kitchens, where hot air or steam hangs around and then the windows are not opened.

Fighting condensation moisture and thereby preventing mould can be done simply by opening your windows more often and heating the room sufficiently. Installing moisture absorbers in rooms that often suffer from this can also certainly help. Finally, we find Rubson Vochtige Binnenmuren a very effective product to block damp and the ideal preparation for painting damp walls afterwards.

White mould on walls due to rising damp

Older houses often have rising damp. This can cause walls to become locally very damp. Soil moisture also contains bacteria and salts, which can cause mould but also saltpetre rash on walls. Nitric scale is a white mould, which is particularly visible on brick walls. Here, you really need to have the wall injected by an expert.

Then brush away the salt/salpeter scale with a steel brush. These steps done and now you want to paint the exterior walls? Then opt for an open paint system for damp walls. For example, Sigma Siloxan Fix Syn is perfect for applying a first coat. Finally, finish with two coats of the water-vapour permeable paint Sigma Siloxan Flex Matt.

Prevent mould in the house

Better to prevent than to cure. As you read above, it is very important to adequately ventilate and air damp rooms, and certainly bedrooms.

  • We therefore recommend opening the window for a while every time you take a bath or shower. In addition, you can also heat your bathroom to reduce condensation on the walls.
  • Always put your cooker hood on in the kitchen when you are cooking and preferably also a little after. This way, the fumes from the cooking pots can be properly extracted and do not stick around.
  • In addition, impregnating your facade with a hydrophobic agent is also important. This is a hydrophobic agent that forms a protective layer against moisture and dirt and thus can also prevent penetrating moisture in the house.

Mould removal and treatment

Unfortunately, do you already have mould in your bathroom, kitchen or bedroom? Then it's important to remove those stains as soon as possible. Don't panic, we'll explain to you right away how to make black mould stains a thing of the past!

Clean the wall or ceiling where mould is present well with diluted bleach. As a ratio, take half bleach, half water. Apply and let everything dry thoroughly.

To repaint this wall, lightly sand the wall, apply a primer of your choice. Do you still see some water rings from your previous damp spots? Then you're better off using very strong primer Sigma Prim Opaque. Finally, finish with the fungus-resistant wall paint Sigmaresist Fungi Matt. This mould-resistant wall and ceiling paint is very suitable for damp rooms such as the bathroom.

What are walls that are too damp?

Apart from mould on your walls, there are many other things that moisture can bring with it. For instance, you can get blisters in your paint or your paint can peel off. You can find more about peeling paint here.

So painting damp walls does not seem like a good idea. Tackling dampness, on the other hand, is the best solution. Anyway, what are walls that are too damp? Rent our moisture meter and it will tell you whether you can paint or not.

The golden rule for interior walls: painting is allowed if the humidity is between 5 and 12%. At higher percentages, painting over damp walls is not a good plan.
