Outdoor wood varnish always a good choice?

A short but powerful answer: no. A varnish for wood outdoors will not benefit all substrates. If it is not about woodwork of boats over water, then it is better to choose a stain instead of a varnish for outdoor. Why do you ask? Well, when you want to protect exterior wood, you may want your wood to remain protected from rain, but also that your exterior wood will not age. With a stain, you kill two birds with one stone.

An exterior varnish, on the other hand, is mainly intended to protect dimensionally stable woodwork such as boat joinery from abrasion. However, if you are going to apply this to patios, chairs or gazebos, then this varnish for wood outdoor products will flake off and your wood will also refrain from greying.
