Which paint do I need for my walls and ceiling?
Which wall paint you apply to walls and ceilings depends on the type of surface. For example, a plastered wall requires different preparation from walls and ceilings that have been painted before.
This paint guide tells you which primer and wall paint are best applied to walls and ceilings made of bricks, plaster, wood, plasterboard or even wallpaper.
In short: a handy guide to provide your walls and ceilings with the appropriate paint 👇
Use wall paint on wood yes or no?
The short but correct answer is no. Wall paint should not be applied on wood. So if you have wooden door frames, window frames or skirting boards, it is better to choose a lacquer. All interior lacquers can be found here.
Conversely, a lacquer can be applied to walls. This way, your walls are also immediately protected against scratches and abrasions. Ideal if your hobby is moving furniture around your home.
Wall paint on ceilings?
Applying wall paint on your ceiling is perfectly possible. All you need to pay attention to is whether your wall paint has a long open flow. We also have a ceiling paint category for you where the paints all have a longer working time, so you can paint a ceiling without streaks.
So be sure to take a look at our selection of ceiling paints. But so you still have wall paint at home and want to apply it to your ceiling? You can definitely do this too!
Painting MDF with wall paint?
Whether you want to paint brown or green MDF, the method remains the same. And no, you do not paint MDF with a classic wall paint. You paint MDF like wood, which means you have to use a lacquer primer and lacquer topcoat. However, if you paint MDF with wall paint, the result will look less neat.
Which wall paint for previously painted walls and ceilings?
Has your wall or ceiling already been painted and does this paint still adhere well to the surface? Then you can start with any of the usual wall paints.
You can also use a wall paint for your painted ceilings. The only thing you have to take into account here is that you buy a wall paint with a long open time and good flow. That way you will achieve a streak-free result.
Sigma Perfect Matt gives you a beautiful stripe-free result on both walls and ceilings. That is why this paint is the favourite choice of both our painthusiasts and our professionals.
Which primer for walls and ceilings?
If your walls and ceilings have never been painted before, you will need to apply primer first. A very solid primer which we always have in stock is Levis Primer Mur & Plafond. This primer for walls and ceilings increases adhesion with finishing coats, fixes slightly powdery substrates and isolates stains.
However, if you are looking for a primer that also isolates smoke stains or soot? Then you'd better go with Sigmacryl Prim Opaque. This primer provides excellent coverage and even increases the open time of the finishing coat, which significantly reduces the risk of deposits and streaks.
Another advantage to this Sigma primer is that you can get the primer in any colour. This makes this primer the top favourite of our professionals.
Paint wooden ceilings with this paint
You know it, the typical wooden slats. You like it or you hate it. If you like this warm wooden style, you can perfectly keep these slats as they are. Are you more the person who prefers a white or neutral ceiling? Then you can actually repaint your wooden ceiling perfectly with Levis Simply Refresh houten plafonds. With this paint, you don't need extra primer, which saves you space in the shed.
Or get going with our professionals' favourite paint system. That's Sikkens Rubbol BL Primer combined with Rubbol BL Magura. A matt paint that will give you a beautiful matt result. Also perfectly possible on rustic wooden beams.
Which paint for plastered walls?
If you are renovating, you will probably have to fill many holes with plaster or plaster entire walls. The golden rule for painting afterwards: wait long enough before you start painting.
A millimetre of plaster needs one day to dry. Only when the plaster is completely dry can you start working with a fixing agent such as Sigma Fix Universal Primer. This ensures that your wall absorbs the same amount of paint everywhere, so you won't have colour and gloss differences in the finish.
After priming, you can apply a wall paint from our top five.
Painting Gyproc or Plasterboard with wall paint
If you want to paint plasterboard with wall paint, things are a little different. This substrate needs a good fixing primer so that your paint is not absorbed by the plasterboard. After this, it is important to apply a paint that forms a protective layer against penetrating moisture. This will allow you to easily remove dirt and stains from your drywall without damaging it.
Our painthusiasts like to use Trimetal Magnaprim Fix as a primer and Magnacryl Prestige Mat or Magnacryl Prestige Velours as a finish.
Want to go one step higher? Then you can apply the Sigmafix Universal Primer and provide the finishing coat with Sigma Pearl Clean Matt.
Which paint for brick walls indoors?
Brick walls are uneven and therefore slightly more difficult to paint. We recommend applying a fixative to this surface first. Think of Sigma Sigmafix Universal primer. Note: you have to dilute this product with four parts water. After this, you can basically start working with any wall paint.
Would you rather keep the rough structure of the bricks by applying a paint with fine grain? Then you can achieve an amazing result with Sigma Kwarts Matt.
Which wall paint to paint over wallpaper?
Painting wallpaper with wall paint is not as easy as you think. It is important to know what kind of wallpaper you have on your wall.
